Safety Concept (S700)

Function Safe Torque Off ("STO")

The STO function serves to safely interrupt the energy supply to the motor directly at the drive.
The safety function STO can be operated:

  • from a safety switch gear (safety relay for example) or
  • from an external safety control or
  • from the built-in safety card S1-2 or S2-2 (from HWR 2.10).

701-724_STO_1_e.jpg Both switch off paths STO1-Enable and STO2-Enable are switched from one single output of a safety switchgear (e.g. a safety relay).
Drives with a hanging load must have an additional safe mechanical blocking (e.g. by a motor holding brake).
Thus, the circuit concept to realize the safety function "Safe Torque Off" within the servo amplifiers of the product line S700 is fit to satisfy the demands to
  • SIL2 according to IEC 61508-2
  • PLd, Cat.3 according to ISO 13849-1

Available from Firmware version 5.18. The two switch off paths STO1-Enable and STO2-Enable are switched separately from two outputs of a safety control. To reach PLe or SIL3 the safe locking of the output stage must be tested periodically by supervising the status feedback signal. The feedback signal "STO-STATUS" must be linked to one of the digital outputs DIGITAL-OUTx (X3A/6 or X3A/7) by setting the ASCII parameter OxMODE70.
The dual channel concept with feedback of this function which is standard in the S700 from HWR 2.10 is certified by the TÜV (TÜV Certificate).
Drives with a hanging load must have an additional safe mechanical blocking (e.g. by an external brake).
Thus, the circuit concept to realize the safety function "Safe Torque Off" within the servo amplifiers of the product line S700 is fit to satisfy the demands to
  • SIL3 according to IEC 61508-2
  • PLe, Cat.4  according to ISO 13849-1

Safety Expansion Cards

Several important safety functions can be realized with expansion cards. These cards (manufacturer PILZ) can be inserted to slot 3 of the S700 (from HWR 2.10) and are configured via a special software SafetyGUI, available from the Downloads page.
The safety concept of these expansion cards, optionally built-in S700 from HWR 2.10 is certified by the TÜV (see TÜV Certificate).
